Job Training & Safety Program

> Printer-friendly version

Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin (MEUW) is committed to fostering a strong culture of safety among our member electric utilities. This begins with comprehensive education on electric systems and safety protocols. The Job Training & Safety Program (JT&S) Program covers all critical aspects of electrical safety, including:

  • Preventive safety training
  • Life-saving emergency procedures
  • Inspection protocols
  • Environmental awareness
  • Equipment handling and safety
  • Insulated tool and personal protective ground testing

Through the JT&S Program, our experienced safety professionals conduct on-site safety meetings tailored to the specific needs of each utility. We also provide customized safety programs to address unique challenges and requirements that are specific to utilities’ and employees’ needs

We offer a comprehensive and interactive training and safety program for electric lineworkers.

The program curriculum concentrates on job-task effectiveness and safety compliance, as determined by industry best practices and applicable state/federal regulations. Although our primary focus is on the electric line worker trade, many MEUW members find our job training and safety services beneficial to other municipal departments as well.

About JT&S
MEUW’s JT&S Program is designed to enhance and increase the knowledge of electrical safety with the newest, up to date rules and information put out by government regulatory agencies through classroom and hands-on field training.
  • Training is delivered by experienced journeyman linemen who have the real-life expertise needed to protect municipal utility employees from danger and to keep them updated on required training.
    • A minimum of four scheduled in-person contacts per year
  • The standardized training also helps during mutual aid events so members can be assured that those working side by side in response to a large-scale or emergency outage event have been trained on the same topics and follow consistent safety rules.
    • Note: Only those municipal utilities actively participating in the JT&S Program will be called upon during in-state mutual aid events coordinated by MEUW.
  • Participating in training also provides unique opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, networking and important information sharing.

What to Expect
This is your safety program — utilities may access training as often as they choose.
  • Videos, worksheets, and online self-service materials are available 24/7.
  • The schedules for hands-on field visits and classroom training are available a minimum of three months in advance.
  • Utilities are welcome to send their lineworkers to any of the scheduled training sessions — on the date and in the location that best meets their needs.
  • Large utilities are invited to split up their crews and send groups to different locations on different dates.
  • Employees who miss a training due to illness or vacation are encouraged to “make-up” the session by learning the same topics in a different location.
  • Standard training times are typically four to six hours; specific start and end times are set by the host utilities.
  • Training attendance is tracked electronically; records are available to utility leaders as needed.
    • Participation in the offered training is the responsibility of the individual and utility management.
